Hudson whiskey bottles double up for the on-trade

Location: UK, USA

Whiskey-loving bartenders in Britain have managed to get through so much Hudson whiskey that the brand is doubling up on bottle sizes available to the UK for two of its flagship products.

Baby Bourbon will be available in a not-so-baby bottle, and you’ll be pouring Manhattan Rye for days, as the two will be launched in a 70cl size exclusively for the on-trade.

The premium brand, distributed by William Grant & Sons, has been at the forefront of craft distilling since it was founded in 2004, bringing American whiskey distilling back to New York for the first time since Prohibition.

And after being launched just four years ago in the UK, Hudson has gained a cult following among whiskey drinkers, prompting the brand to upgrade to the larger size, which will be sold in the original American 75cl bottle, under-filled to 70cl.

‘We are changing to a bigger bottle, but we haven’t changed our process. We still make whiskey grain-to-glass at the Tuthilltown Distillery in the Hudson Valley. Everything was, and still is, done by hand. It’s been quite a journey, from regular folks making whiskey to award-winning distillers,’ said Ralph Erenzo, one of the two founders at Hudson whiskey.

‘We have certainly made remarkable progress in the recent past, hiring more people, laying down more whiskey and improving our efficiency, but we are still far from affording a bespoke 70cl bottle for the UK,’ Erenzo added.

The smoky Baby Bourbon, made with 100% Empire State corn, is mellowed by vanilla and caramel and said to be ‘the perfect introduction to aged whiskey’. Manhattan Rye is bold with sweet notes of honey and coconut, and made with 100% rye, sourced within 40 miles of the distillery.

The other member of Hudson’s core UK range, Four Grain Bourbon, will remain in the 35cl size only – for now.
