Brown-Forman has jumped into the Irish whiskey game with the first release from Slane, a new brand based in County Meath, just outside of Dublin.
The drinks company teamed up with the Conyngham family, who own Slane Castle and its surrounding land, in 2015, and Brown-Forman is spending $50m (£38.6m) on building a new distillery in the stables.
‘It’s going to take generations to build this into a big, global brand,’ said co-founder and global brand ambassador Alex Conyngham. ‘This is really about future generations.’
Slane’s first expression, released in April in Ireland and May in the UK, is made of liquid bought in and extra-aged while the brand’s own distillery is built and its own resulting distilled liquid matures.
The procured liquid is aged for a minimum of four years in bourbon casks before it comes to Slane, which has developed a triple-cask extra-ageing process, taking place over a further two-and-a-half years and incorporating virgin oak, seasoned bourbon and Tennessee barrels and oloroso casks.
The resulting liquid wears its American oak influence clearly, with vanilla, butterscotch and clotted cream mingling with orchard fruit and a warming boost of dried fruits and almonds from the oloroso casks.
Brown-Forman has partnered with a number of bars across the country for the launch, including The Sun Tavern in London, The Hideout in Bath, The Finnieston in Glasgow and East Village in Leeds.
