Alsace winemaker Domaine Zind-Humbrecht has appointed González Byass UK as its exclusive distributor in the UK.
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht was established in 1959, with its vineyards cultivated exclusively biodynamically since 1998, and with a non-interventionist philosophy in the winery too.
‘The UK has been one of our largest markets for 30 years,’ said owner and winemaker Olivier Humbrecht MW (pictured top). ‘Whilst Alsace wines have long been appreciated by enthusiasts there is still a job to do to introduce them to the general public. In González Byass UK we have found a dedicated team that we are confident can take our wines to the next level as far as distribution and awareness is concerned. Being family-owned and with a manageable portfolio of great estates, we believe González Byass is a good fit for us, and trust the team to be our ambassadors in the UK.’
Ben Wyse, brand manager at González Byass, told Imbibe the plan was now to increase the wines’ distribution in the on-trade. ‘It’s widely regarded as one of the top Alsace domaines, but we feel it’s under-represented in the UK on-trade at the moment,’ Wyse said. ‘It’s a hard sell with Alsatian wines, but we’ve got an agenda to push that more.’
The wine merchant will be hosting a release tasting of the 2014 wines in the spring of 2016, for press and the trade. ‘It’s quite different having a white wine released two years after harvest; it just shows how long these wines are allowed to age and spend time on the lees,’ Wyse added.
The domaine’s wines were previously available via Gauntleys of Nottingham, among others distributors, with a fair amount of direct sales too. It will be exclusive to González Byass from 30 November, allowing the winery ‘to regroup everything under one roof,’ according to Wyse.
