Canned wine brand The Uncommon makes on-trade debut

English canned wine brand The Uncommon is entering the UK on-trade for the first time by partnering with London merchant Jascots. The merchant will supply the producer’s flagship canned wine, a sparkling Bacchus, as well as a brand-new rosé.

‘The Uncommon [is]a truly innovative and sustainable new wine producer,’ commented Jascots managing partner Miles MacInnes. ‘Wines like The Uncommon’s sparkling Bacchus will change customer’s perception of wines in can and reveal the potential for quality wine in alternative packaging.’

Meanwhile, the new rosé is a blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The Uncommon co-founders Henry Connell and Alex Thraves said that the rosé has ‘vibrant red fruits of strawberry and raspberry with a hint of flint. It’s crisp, dry and fruity’.

Like the Bacchus, the rosé is made as a still wine, then a small amount of CO2 is added before canning to give it a light fizz.

Both wines come in a 25cl can and are produced in Connell and Thraves’ winery in Surrey, with grapes sourced from two vineyards in Hampshire and two in Kent and one in Surrey. Last year, the duo launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise capital for their winery and canning line.

‘We make really good wine, it just happens to be in a can for sustainability and convenience reasons,’ commented Connell and Thraves. ‘The format is different but the quality is right up there with any other fine European wine.’

The Uncommon’s official launch with Jascots will be on 25 March.
